Erin Brockovich: “People’s Reporting Registry” Map

Erin Brockovich: “People’s Reporting Registry” Map

"For the past decade I have received hundreds of thousands of emails from people around the United States and the globe reporting problems that they are experiencing in their communities. Many of these inquiries are about environmental concerns.

I believe that it is the voice of the people who live in these towns dotted across the country, who on a daily basis are experiencing the harmful effects of water, air and soil pollution. It is critical that we listen to their plight and identify what might be causing them harm and learn from what they are experiencing. After all, who better than they to know what is happening to them than they themselves? We don’t live in their shoes nor experience what effects a contamination might be doing to them, their families or their health.

It has been this past year that I noticed many of the emails coming to me were of concerns from neighborhoods that were reporting what they see as too much disease and cancers amongst them. Reports like 14 children on one street with cancer; Reports of 20 or more children in one neighborhood with brain tumors; Reports of people being stitched together through Facebook to only discover that tens upon tens of them from the same high school have cancer. This is when I decided it was just too many reports from the people and possibly wasn’t a coincidence that I created a map to help better understand what might really be going on out there.

I was shocked when the map was completed that so many people were reporting such issues across the United States and beyond. From the State of Kansas all the way to the East Coast, I can barely tell that I am looking at a map of the United States. This map is called the “People’s Reporting Registry” and it is designed for us to just look at what the people are saying and to learn from what they are experiencing and seeing so that we can begin to find some progressive solution to these problems and the environmental contamination that we all must face.

If we don’t see this how can we possibly begin to find solutions? If you are experiencing what appears to be a known or suspected contamination in your neighborhood and in your (the peoples) observation of what appears to be excess illness, you can report it here. Your voice is how we can see the problem and begin to seek out solutions that can assist and bring together companies in your community with YOU the community and begin the process of identifying what could be on overlooked cluster and to begin a cleanup process and address the health concerns of communities.

It is time that companies and people co-exist together without lost business and without lost lives."

- Erin Brockovich
http://www.brockovich.com/peoplesreportingregistrymap.html

-----

Find serious issues in your local area? Report it to Erin Brockovich so it may be pegged on the map in order to be tracked and investigated. A brilliant idea - special thanks to Erin Brockovich. Pass it around.

Prominent skeptic says he now believes in global warming

"WASHINGTON (AP) — A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.

The study of the world's surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming deniers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of "Climategate," a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.

Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.

He said he went even further back, studying readings from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His ultimate finding of a warming world, to be presented at a conference Monday, is no different from what mainstream climate scientists have been saying for decades......."

I have a small eco-lodge on 7 acres in Londres near Quepos, Costa Rica. It has a yoga space, and the Master suite has a kitchen and "salon" plus dining area. Plus another small suite for a total of 4 rooms, sleeping up to 11 or 12 people and 3 full baths. This would be great if someone wants to run a Yoga or health retreat for the premium time slot of Dec 26, through am on Jan 2. visit FincaAmanecer.com for photos, and understand I do need to up date the information. $1500 for the space for the week. I would close it to all other guests.

Bali's, Indonesia First Eco Neighbourhood in Development Opportunities to Join

Bali's first Eco Neighbourhood is well on its way! The neighbourhood will be the first residential Eco Neighbourhood in Bali. It will be located just 15 minutes from central Ubud on the beautiful Petanu river. The neighbourhoods' Eco Principles in Action are outlined in detail on the Taman Petanu Eco neighbourhood website http://www.tamanpetanu.com/ . Included in the plans are; permaculture landscaping & applied principles, sustainable design and green materials in construction, leading examples of waste and water management, a planned eco farm and initial community outreach activities.

The neighbourhood's community aspires to be a model for sustainable living. It is founded on an intent dedication to uphold and enrich Bali’s environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability. What truly makes the heart of the developing Eco neighbourhood, are the members. Taman Petanu member's have backgrounds and are active in the areas of environmental sustainability, education development work, social outreach, health and holistic living and community education. You may find it interesting to browse through and learn about the members who are guiding the neighbourhood development. For more information on the members please visit http://www.tamanpetanu.com/about-the-neighborhood/our-members

Taman Petanu Eco Neighbourhood is listed on the global network for Intentional communities http://www.ic.org/ and the World Wide Permaculture Network http://www.permacultureglobal.com/ and the Global Eco Villages Network

Currently there is still opportunities for families and individuals who share similar hopes and vision's to become involved and join the Taman Petanu Eco Neighbourhood.

At present, I am working on the development team of Alam Santi Design http://www.alamsantidesign.com/ who is overseeing the development of the Common facilities for the neighbourhood. I'am excited to spread the word about the neighbourhood and hope to expand the Taman Petanu community with like minded people, active in creating a more sustainable future.

Please feel free to explore both the Alam Santi Website and The Taman Petanu website. There are also many free resources on both site's, for those interested in sustainable technologies, design and creating sustainable communities. Most of the sustainable technologies and practices in the Taman Petanu development plan's than can be adapted and applied to both urban and rural developments. I would love to hear your opinions on the development plan's and any idea's or recommendations are welcomed!

The tragedy of Raquel Nelson and her family is shedding light on the unsafe conditions of many of America's roads. "More than 47,000 people[ in America] were killed while walking from 2000-2009" In San Francisco between 2003 and 2007, there were 600 pedestrian collisions on 19th Avenue.

Transportation for America is asking road users to send in pictures/videos of poorly designed American roadways. Your submissions will be used to educate lawmakers and policy planners.

Email: You can email photos to us at photos@t4america.org. When you send them, please let us know if we can upload these to our Flickr account (with your credit information in caption like this one.) Anywhere we use your photos, we’ll always give you credit.

Flickr: Add photos to the T4 America Flickr group, and tag them with “dangerous by design” so we’re sure to see them. If you have photos but don’t want to add them to the group, you can just add the tag “dangerous by design”. We always prefer photos licensed with Creative Commons, so we can use these photos in meetings with Congress or on the blog with credit given to the source.

Video: You can upload videos directly to our Facebook page, but Youtube or other video sharing sites are fine. Send us a link. If you send in videos directly to the email address, they need to be under 10 mb.
If you’ve got another way to show us your photos other than these, drop us a line at photos@t4america.org

You can find more information and view pictures at http://t4america.org/blog/2011/08/17/raquel-nelsons-story-may-be-rare-but-the-dangerous-conditions-are-not-%E2%80%94%C2%A0show-us/

Re: Soap / baking soda, baking soda body washing, washing baby with baking soda, baking soda skin care

For regular use on the teeth this can be too corrosive and erode the enamel, though i believe it's ok as a rinse, it's just rubbing it in that abrades the teeth. Same with salt, this is a great rinse and probably ok to brush with when dissolved in water so it is no longer in sharp little crystals.
Fine bentonite clay is also a good medium for toothpaste, can be combined with powdered herbs which are beneficial for the teeth.
I still use soap for my hands but the rest of my body i mostly use raw apple cider vinegar, this helps replentish the skins natural bacteria population after washing with soap too.
The big anti soap crusade i have been working on is shampoo. I have not used shampoo in 5 years and my hair has never been healthier! Even as a child we always used 'natural' shampoos, and only twice a week, so limited in toxins, but still sodium lauryl sulphate. My scalp was always incredibly itchy from the oil being stripped out, and then too oily. I started doing shampoo every 2 weeks and that improved things, but when i actually did the shampoo i was still in misery for a couple days... and my hair was really difficult to deal with, really tangly.
Then my friend told me she just didn't use any shampoo, her hair looked great, i was on my way to the shower and just never used it again! My hair was, as forwarned, pretty greasy for the next month as my scalp continued to overcompensate, expecting it's oils to be stripped away. I washed it with hot water every day and continued my usual practice of rubbing a few drops of rosemary essential oil into the roots. One day after about a month i washed it and it just evened out and has stayed in balance ever since.
Well, if i'm out in the woods with only cold creek water and i'm not inspired to wash more frequently than a month, it does get a little oily, but not like it would had i been using shampoo.
Now i wash with apple cider vinegar (preferably infused with herbs) diluted honey and or tea of rosemary and sage. Blondes should use tea of lavender or chamomile. Honey is good as the last thing put on the hair, and let to sit for a minute before rinsing.
Sometimes i'll use an egg to get it really clean, which works just like shampoo because it is an emulsifier. An emulsifier blends oil and water based liquids together, which of course normally would separate. So by massaging it into the scalp, the oils blend with the egg, then the water is able to carry the oil and egg all out together. I actually mix the vinegar into the egg with some sort of oil which is good for the hair... hemp, coconut, sesame, olive. May seem like a lot of work, but better than buying shampoo... and i only do this a few time a year. Vinegar and honey is sufficient the rest of the time.
The only reason i haven't gotten into baking soda, although i'm sure it works great (for deodorant too) is it's another thing produced in a laboratory than i cannot make myself! Vinegar is easy, put fruit juice in a jar for a few months... bees and chickens are easy to raise too.

Great thread. My doctor told me not to bath daily and not to use soap. She said the dead skin on your skin is a protective layer. I then tried bathing every other day and used my hands and water to wash (except for feet, groin ears and hands). Then I thought about using a cup of warm water and a TBS of baking soda. I figured it would make the water less sharp (more silky) and might help cut through my oily skin. It worked and then I rinse and pat dry. I can't believe how well it works on everything, hair to feet. I also use it to shave in the show once my beard is softened by the water.

I fill up a litre bottle with hot tap water and BS and when it cools and the extra BS has settled, I filled a small Dollar Store spray bottle and that is what i use as a spray on body soap. I keep toping up the litre bottle as necessary till there is no more noticeable BS settling on the bottom.

We have used BS and some Xylitol as my tooth paste for two years now and our teeth are clean of tarter and neither I nor my wife have needed an annual professional cleaning.

I have used my BS and xylitol spay as a deodorant (not too much xylitol or you will feel sticky and too much is a cost waste) and I make sure the pits and other parts are air dried before dressing (pat dried first)). Even after a hockey game my wife says I don't smell.

We also throw a heaping TB into the wash and a tsp in with the dish water.

I suspect if it will be better to bath our little guy in the plastic baby tubs with a TB or two. He could splash round in it while M/D drizzles the water and bath him using only our hands lightly. This is what gt me to search out info on BS washing.

I'm not sure the effect of not rinsing with clear water. Tomorrow, I will do a final spray and not rinse and see what happens. There won't really be that much left on the skin, eh?

Legislation To End Federal Marijuana Ban To Be Introduced In Congress

Legislation To End Federal Marijuana Ban To Be Introduced In Congress

Marijuana Bill In Congress: Barney Frank, Ron Paul Legislation Would End Federal Ban On Pot

"Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) will introduce legislation on Thursday to end the federal ban on marijuana and let the states decide whether to legalize it.

“The legislation would limit the federal government’s role in marijuana enforcement to cross-border or inter-state smuggling, allowing people to legally grow, use or sell marijuana in states where it is legal,” according to the Marijuana Policy Project, which advocates for pot legalization. “The legislation is the first bill ever introduced in Congress to end federal marijuana prohibition.”

More than a dozen states allow the sale of medical marijuana, but the practice is not legal under federal law, leading to confusion and clashes between local and federal authorities.

In March, for example, DEA agents raided two medical marijuana dispensaries in West Hollywood, California, and 26 dispensaries in 13 cities across Montana.

This despite the Obama administration's announcement two years ago that it would not arrest or prosecute medical marijuana users or suppliers who are not violating local laws -- a reversal of the Bush administration's policy that federal drug laws should be enforced even in states that had legalized medical marijuana. Attorney General Eric Holder has said he will clarify the Justice Department's position.

The bill by Frank and Paul comes 40 years after President Richard Nixon first declared a war on drugs. Last week, to commemorate the anniversary, a group of former law enforcement officials unveiled a new report detailing the failures of the government's long battle against illegal drugs and denounces the Obama administration's current drug policies.

"Since President Nixon declared 'war on drugs' four decades ago, this failed policy has led to millions of arrests, a trillion dollars spent and countless lives lost, yet drugs today are more available than ever," said Norm Stamper, former chief of police in Seattle and a speaker for legalization-advocacy group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.

"President Obama's drug officials keep saying they've ended the 'drug war,'" the LEAP member said. "But our report shows that's just not true."

US Orders News Blackout Over Crippled Nebraska Nuclear Plant
http://www.myweathertech.com/2011/06/17/us-orders-news-blackout-over-crippled-nebraska-nuclear-plant/

"A shocking report prepared by Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency (FAAE) on information provided to them by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) states that the Obama regime has ordered a “total and complete” news blackout relating to any information regarding the near catastrophic meltdown of the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant [photo top left] located in Nebraska.

According to this report, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant suffered a “catastrophic loss of cooling” to one of its idle spent fuel rod pools on 7 June after this plant was deluged with water caused by the historic flooding of the Missouri River which resulted in a fire causing the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) to issue a “no-fly ban” over the area.

Located about 20 minutes outside downtown Omaha, the largest city in Nebraska, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant is owned by Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) who on their website denies their plant is at a “Level 4” emergency by stating: “This terminology is not accurate, and is not how emergencies at nuclear power plants are classified.”

Climate Scientists Told To 'Stop Speaking In Code'

"COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Scientists at a major conference on Arctic warming were told Wednesday to use plain language to explain the dramatic melt in the region to a world reluctant to take action against climate change.

An authoritative report released at the meeting of nearly 400 scientists in Copenhagen showed melting ice in the Arctic could help raise global sea levels by as much as 5 feet this century, much higher than earlier projections."

James White, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, told fellow researchers to use simple words and focus on the big picture when describing their research to a wider audience. Focusing too much on details could blur the basic science, he said: "If you put more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, it will get warmer."

Prominent U.S. climate scientist Robert Corell said researchers must try to reach out to all parts of society to spread awareness of the global implications of the Arctic melt.

"Stop speaking in code. Rather than 'anthropogenic,' you could say 'human caused,'" Corell said.

The Arctic has been warming twice as fast as the global average in recent decades, and the latest five-year period is the warmest since measurements began in the 19th century, according to the report by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program – a scientific body set up by the eight Arctic rim countries.

The report emphasized "the need for greater urgency" in combating global warming. But nations remain bogged down in their two-decade-long talks on reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

The World Bank's special envoy for climate change, Andrew Steer, said the new findings "are a cause for great concern." The sea rise will affect millions in both rich and poor countries, but would particularly affect the poor, he said, because "they tend to live in the lowest lying land and have the fewest resources to adapt."

Steer said bank studies showed the costs of major flooding events on infrastructure and the economy could run into billions of dollars.

"It is clear that we are not on track in the battle against climate change," he said.

Bogi Hansen, an expert on ocean currents from the Faeroe Islands, said one problem is that scientists can come off as unsure about conclusions because they are reluctant to talk about anything with 100 percent certainty.

White, the Colorado scientist, agreed. At a news conference later Wednesday, he said those opposed to reining in fossil fuels "sow the seeds of doubt that give the people the impression that ... unless every single one of us lines up behind an idea, that decisions can't be taken."

The AMAP report will be delivered to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the foreign ministers of Canada, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia, at an Arctic Council meeting in Greenland next week.

Are Insurers Writing the Health Reform Regulations?

Are Insurers Writing the Health Reform Regulations?

"One of the reasons I wanted to return to journalism after a long career as an insurance company PR man was to keep an eye on the implementation of the new health reform law. Many journalists who covered the reform debate have moved on, and some consider the writing of regulations to implement the legislation boring and of little interest to the public.

But insurance company lobbyists know the media are not paying much attention. And so they are able to influence what the regulations actually look like--and how the law will be enforced--with little awareness, much less scrutiny.

At a January meeting of several hundred patient and consumer advocates in Washington, a top aide to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius all but pleaded with those in the audience to bombard the Obama Administration with messages insisting that the law be implemented as Congress intended. Rest assured, he told them, that the insurance industry's lobbyists were relentless in their demands that the regulations be written to give them the maximum slack.........."

A blog about the inevitability of life as a consumer, the goal of the Maximalist, is to track my personal spending habits, exploring my level of involvement in the global economic system. I hope to learn how deeply entrenched I am in this system, and discover new ways to work consciously within this system, or learn to work within a subsector outside of the overarching economic system.

The blog came out of a project for a class “Limit Cases: International Film, Literature, and Economic Rights.” I would greatly appreciate any participation with the blog, either “following,” posting, or emailing me privately with comments and feedback.

Thank you!
