There are some great video clips in the link above - check 'em out. One of which is a recent press conference demanding General Motors apologize to the American people for destroying the automaker’s EV1 plug-in electric vehicle.
As a reminder of the stubbornness of the US car industry & Congress over the last 30 years - watch the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?"

Re: Auto bailout - Revenge of the Electric Car
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 6:35 PMfrom the article in the original post:
"Of course, I am concerned about all the jobs lost, if the Big Three go under. However, let's keep in mind that Obama's energy plan promises "5 Million new Green Jobs... that cannot be outsourced." And the plan includes putting "1 million Plug-In Hybrid/flexible fuel vehicles, which can get up to 150 miles per gallon of gas -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America." So far, that's something I can stand behind that is definitely a better alternative to what we've got now. That is something really exciting to look forward to."

Re: Auto bailout - Revenge of the Electric Car
Thu, December 4, 2008 - 10:12 AMI want to make a distinction between electric cars and hybrids or essentially self sustaining electric cars (hybrids) and plug-in electrics. There is a HUGE problem with plug-in electric cars in that while they may reduce local pollution, the amount of electricity used to charge them simply off-shores the same if not more pollution than would be caused by a gas equivalent. Hybrids are beautiful inventions in that they DON'
T need to be plugged in and therefore DON'T off-shore the pollution caused by re-charging the vehicle. It seems the more and more I talk to people though the more and more they think pure electrics are the answer and they aren't. A lot of our power plants are still coal power plants that are dispersing more pollution than any said gas car -

Re: Auto bailout - Revenge of the Electric Car
Mon, December 15, 2008 - 6:57 AMSome of that may be true NOW Peter but it as solar & wind become more popular people can use a solar panel &/or wind turbine to re-charge those batteries. And, the batteries are getting better too.
Still, though, even coal plants etc are getting better at dealing with pollution too - so there's no need to just throw the idea away just because it may not be absolutly perfect right now. Look how many problems we've had with cars now - and with lead in gasoline & exhaust issues. GEEEZ - it's easier to control the pollution at one giant plant than it is for each individual vehicle too.
