Check out this fabulous little video:

It inspired me to find & join a local organic CSA (Community Sustained Agrculture). Go to localharvest.org to see if there is a CSA near you.

With energy costs going nowhere but up for the forseeable future, buying locally grown food has never been more important.

Go green!

Don't know about your neck of TX but we have some awesome farmer's markets here in Austin, and a food coop (w/another one in the works) as well as Greenling.com which delivers boxes of local fresh produce. We are very lucky!

I've been doing this for a while now, I couldn't recommend it more. Especially if you really love food. Not only is it actually cheaper than buying non-organic produce shipped in from elsewhere but the food itself is so superior that you'll wonder why you didn't sign up sooner. I'd also suggest that with the rising food costs, and the increasing awareness regarding food miles, slow food and locavores, that it's probably a good time to create a solid relationship with a farm before they've all got their lists filled with regulars and no more spots for newbies.

Not sustainable for a human population over 6 billion

Ver - No doubt but it's at least a step in the right direction.

Y'all ARE lucky in Austin! I'm not close enough to the city to shop there, but when I visit, I LOVE to pop in to Wheatsville Coop for some treats you just can't get in the hill country. I've been supporting my local farmer's market for years, but their selection left a lot to be desired.

Ultimately, I hope to grow my own food, but until I learn how, I think this CSA will make my life as a rural vegan MUCH easier & healthier--not to mention I will no longer be voting w/ my dollars to continue the unsustainable importation of veggies from other continents.

And Ver is right, responsibly feeding 6+billion people is a HUGE challenge, but moving toward common sense solutions like buying local food IS the whole point of the video.
