Executive Order to re-build Sustainably
I was just thinking with the recent bouts with tornadoes. Plus, the Hurricanes of Katrina and Rita a few years back plus and other natural disasters. Why don't we organize a petition or mandate of some kind to re-build using only environmentally friendly products and install more sustainable energy systems? Rather than re-building exactly the same way, here's an opportunity to implement the positive environmental changes we'd all like to see come about.
What are some of the most effective ways to bring this about? Nows the time what with the Presidential election coming up in a few months.
Would you suggest a Petition, demand an Executive Order or what? What are your thoughts?

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 7:56 PMRight you are, Chopper 22!!
A mandate to rebuild responsibly & sustainably is an idea whose time has come!
I'd think an online petition w/ lots of signatures would give the issue weight to convince politicians it has enough public support to warrant them to push for it. It wouldn't matter much if the mandate came from congress or the executive branch as long as it goes into law that post-disaster rebuilding uses environmentally sustainable building designs & materials.
I wonder if you could team up w/ care2.com or something to start up such a petition? -

Sat, May 3, 2008 - 7:52 AMCheck this out...
"After the tornado, the city council passed a resolution stating that all city building would be built to LEED - platinum standards, making it the first city in the nation to do so. Greensburg is rebuilding as a "green" town, with the help of the non-profit organization created to help the residents learn about and implement the green living initiative, Greensburg GreenTown[6].
Here is an account of the green projects on the towns official website:

Re: Executive Order to re-build Sustainably
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 10:08 AMthe politics of such laws on a national level seems impossible. email petitions are basically worthless. they hold very llittle if any, at all, influence on any level of government. this type of law, like most these days, is most effectively done at the local level and done in person, at council meetings and in the gathering of support from all community agencies possible. the first step is to take a hard look at how policy is processed in your town. look at what groups and politians are in support of this and start asking them what could be done and how. it is very helpful to have a good idea, in the context of the local politic what exactly you would like to have happen. what is the current policy and how does it need to change.
regardless of how great the idea is and how much it is needed, when your are wanting ot change policy in any government you have to get active. forget petitions, especially on line petitions. educate your self to what is the actaully policy and who is your communtiy and do they care, do they know, etc. you might find yourself engaged in education.
but what ever it takes do it.
the times are with this sort of action
so do it.
