dishwasher vs hand washing dishes

although i have found numerous sites claiming that automatic dishwashers are the environmental choice, if you look at the research, it just doesn't add up...and many have corporate sponsors who are...you guessed it...the manufacturing companies of the dishwashing machines...

looks like the ecoholic way of dishwashing is to hand wash:
1. wash large sinkloads at a time to conserve water...only fill the sink halfway full for soapy soaking
2. use moderately warm water as opposed to HOT water
3. use a sinkful of water to rinse with rather than rinsing under a running tap
4. use an ecofriendly soap

found the following entry here: www.ecojoes.com/dishwasher...nd-washing/

Let’s say you’re about to clean your dishes, and you want to do it in the best way environmentally possible. So do you use your energy-efficient dishwasher, or do wash your dishes by hand? It might seem like a simple question, but man oh man there are a lot of answers (and a lot of other websites which have covered this question, with one result or the other). I’ll try to look at both sides of this surprisingly heated debate.

Water Use

A modern dishwasher will use less water than you would if you hand-washed your dishes. But this is assuming that you hand wash your dishes several times a day instead of leaving them in the sink for a “big wash”, which I always end up doing. This also assumes that you don’t use too much water pre-rinsing the dishes. So basically, it all boils down to efficiency of scale (doing a large load is more efficient than doing many smaller loads of dishes). If you only do large loads and moderate your water use, hand-washing is more efficient. But the smaller your loads are and the more water you use, the bigger the advantage of using a dishwasher.

Energy Use

Most of the energy for washing dishes (whether by hand or by dishwasher) comes from heating up the water (unless you like to wash your dishes with ice-cold water). Obviously, the dishwasher uses some electricity on top of that, so hand-washing wins this battle.
Time

Overall Environmental Impact

Hand-washing wins this one. There are phosphate-free soaps available for dishwashing or handwashing, but the energy and materials used to make a dishwasher is considerable. Plus, dishwashers take more energy, sometimes use more water, and sometimes even take more time. So unless you are doing a huge load of dishes (or unless you work in a restaurant), then hand-washing is the way to go. So put on them yellow gloves, fill up a pot with hot, soapy water, and get ready for some good ol’ hand-washing.

As I no longer have a dishwasher everything I wash is by hand, no choice any longer.

But what I have been wondering about lately is when you make lunch, say a sandwich, which is better for the environment, putting said sandwich on a plate that has to be washed, on a paper towel that has to be thrown away or on a cloth napkin which has to be washed in a washing machine?

      lol...good question!

my guess is go with the plate....considering the resources that went into making the paper towel, plate, and cloth napkin....the plate will last longer than either of the other two choices...the paper towel will end up in the landfill...and the cloth napkin will eventually have to be replaced long before the plate will....

Plates can wait a while, or you can simply dust off the crumbs, swish some water over it, and put it in the drainer. Paper towels, well, I use them for my sammiches so i can't really say anything. Cloth napkins are great, but best saved for dinner.

I would use paper towel...they can go in your compost pile afterward.

Here! Here GoGo!! Great points all ~ conservation is KEY!

And I'd second Nanci & say be sure to buy recycled paper towels... remember, there's no point in recycling if we don't buy the post consumer recycled content products & thereby close that circle ~ err triangle, err square: reduce, re-use, recycle, re-use again ;~)

Oh, & Songflower, maybe you & your boyfriend should stop & ask yourselves when was the last time either of you got sick from eating off insufficiently washed dishes? I think he may be wasting a lot of his personal energy, as well as a lot of heated water, in being a bit of a perfectionist over the dishes. Buy some chemical free eco-friendly dish soap, give everything a good soak & scrub, and then stop at one or two rinses ~ maybe try that for a week & see if either of you get sick for lack of that third rinse & then smile thinking of how many gallons of water you saved...

i agree lyoness....we are such an overly sanitized society, aren't we? related to that thought line is the fact that we have forgotten that EXPOSURE to bacteria, etc is what strengthens our immune system....we should all eat a little dirt and lick a few toilet bowls instead of sanitizing the shit outta everything, huh? lol

I'm sorry, but as a resident of California I have to strongly disagree. We're in the middle of a severe water crisis right now, and while washing dishes by hand has a certian romance to it, it wastes faaar more water than a modern dishwasher does. My boyfriend's the one who does the dishes in our house, as we don't have a dishwasher and so we wash dishes by hand out of necessity not choice, and in order to get the dishes as clean as he likes, the water needs to be verry hot (gas usage) and he's rinsing things at least 3 times to make sure all food and soap residue have been washed off. Plus, we're a busy couple and the dishes tend to pile up, which can create a very unhealthy situation if we let them go too long.
Modern dishwashers use a fraction of the water and energy used to hand wash dishes. God, we'd love to have one if we had room in our kicthen. And if you think about it, doing a full load of dishes is pretty much the equivalent of doing a full load of laundry.

you are absolutely correct, if you use extremely hot water and rinse 3 times, you are tipping the scales in favor of using an automatic dishwasher

the handwashing only comes ahead if you follow the points mentioned in the original posting

this is similar to the bath vs shower debate...which uses more water/energy?

well....if you take a short lukewarm shower (5-10 minutes) and use a low-flow shower head or turn off the water while you are soaping, you can use far less water than a bath

however, if you take a 30 minute HOT shower with a full-flow shower head, you might use more water than a bath

conservation starts with CONSERVATION first...the extremes/absence of conservation will always tip the scales
