I might have to move back in with family in the near future. They have a large back yard and I may have the option of building a yurt. I am wondering if anyone has any tips about an affordable place to get one or way to build a similar structure for less money.

I am not sure I have the skill for that. I am going to be a college student and need some electricity, possibly some form of air conditioning, and enough space for my stuff.

I bet you could make a cool dwelling like that, but I dont have the skills for it, and this is earthquake country, so I better have someone who knows what they are doing.

These earth buildings are cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and because of the domed shape, highly earthquake resistant. They are simple and inexpensive to make (like making an igloo out of bags of dirt instead of packed snow - I live in snow country). You could use burlap bags instead of the tubes....

Have you checked Craigs List for used yurts? When I lived in Oregon, I would see used ones in the paper fairly often. Pacific Yurts makes good ones: www.yurts.com/default.aspx

        Best of luck to you!
